Wow, it's been a long time. I don't know why I quit writing this blog - with the exception that their were some worthless SOB's watching it, thinking they could get me in trouble at work. Well, I have since retired from that retard show and moved on to more interesting things in life. I've been writing and making movies. My film, PLATYPOSSUM, debuted in an unfinished form at the Cape Comic Con in Cape Girardeau, MO a couple weeks ago. It will make an honest and finished debut here in Carbondale, Illinois at the Varsity Theater on August 19th, 2017.
Anyway, I figured I'd drop in and say "howdy" again. I'll come back more often, I promise. In the meantime, here's a listing of all my books on www.amazon.com. Buy one, would ya? Thanks.

I've been trying to finish the screenplay to SH*TSUCKERS FROM OUTER SPACE. With luck, I'll finish it by month's end. We'll film it when the weather gets a little warmer, and I get my tax return back and buy that high-definition digital video camera. Til then, we'll work on short little films. Check out the first one, FARTULA, over at my Facebook page. Just go to Facebook and look me up. Next weekend, we're going to film my entry into the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE short film contest, and probably the sequel to Fartula, FARTULA RISES AGAIN. I'm dedicating 2011 to exploring film making....and I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of Final Cut Pro. Ought to be fun. I'll post the videos on youtube soon. Til then, you'll have to visit Facebook to see them.Rogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-62666497900029827192010-12-20T20:53:00.001-08:002010-12-20T20:59:22.579-08:00almost Christmas<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 295px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/TRAzIKwKncI/AAAAAAAAASA/lckXOaQWtgo/s320/162684_10150110690100625_151181515624_7409119_451017_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552994555966168514" />

When I was young and naive, I used to think that you reaped what you sowed. It still amazes me I've made it this far. So many good people I've known have perished while I survived. Makes you wonder about the design of the universe and whether or not there is a plan at all. My father died at the ripe young age of 50 and it bothers me that I am approaching that age. But, I figure if it's my time, it's my time. There are so many people my age and younger who seem to have given up on life. I refuse to do that, although I sometimes find myself giving up on the human race. I've been trying not to do that, either....even though it is hard sometimes. Things like the oil spill in the Gulf and the ensuing lack of concern by my fellow man just really, really, really bother me. We're all so insensitive to things these days. All so self-centered. Or, at least, that's the way it seems to me. I could go on and on about things.....and I probably should. Things just aren't right, my friends. So, I try my best to be a good person, love my children, be a good father, and dream of a better day for us all. I think, in the end, optimism is the best answer to the pessimism the world throws our way. Smile at the SOB's.....it'll confuse their tiny little minds....and maybe, if we are lucky, it just might rub off on the idiots. One can only hope.Rogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-72197992450175868902010-07-03T00:02:00.001-07:002010-07-03T00:15:28.247-07:00There I was on a July morning looking for love<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/TC7gvB7uFSI/AAAAAAAAARg/dwJewkikCoc/s320/-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489572094388606242" />

The title for this installment comes from one of my favorite bands, Uriah Heep. They played in Chicago last night but I missed it. First time they've been in the states in ten years. Damn, I'm gonna regret that. I always loved the song "July Morning" with its anthemish keyboard intro and the twenty years+ dead voice of David Byron. Their new lead singer, Bernie Shaw, has sung with them for twenty years. They're still a viable band. Their 2008 album, "Wake the Sleeper", rocks. Wish I'd seen them.

The illustration to this installment was done to accompany perhaps the most controversial story I've ever written. "Mary had a little lamb" is about the daughter of God. Things don't go so well for her when she is sent to St. Louis to face her destiny. The story ended on a positive note, though. It was written way back in the good ol' 1980's. It never found a home....till recently, that is. It was published in an online magazine about six months back. I really love this illustration because it captures the mood of the story perfectly. If you like the illustration, hunt down "Marginal Boundaries" on the good ol' Internet. Lots of good stories in there.

Anyway, I need to try to sleep now, folks. Have a happy 4th of July.Rogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-21777817506391353672010-06-20T05:58:00.000-07:002010-06-20T06:05:05.857-07:00Father's Day 2010<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/TB4RI-4TcmI/AAAAAAAAARY/Xav-ZOKLOu8/s320/15030_1288960155082_1562572000_30833668_5730369_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484840242199622242" />

Well, it's Father's Day again. I've been busy with a few things. I'm finishing up a 20 minute or so play for Clifton Bailey's Little Dready Boy Productions. It's a zombie play to be produced the day of the Zombie Walk here in Carbondale. I believe it's the first weekend in May. Just Google it for info. Also been doing some modifications around the house. If you drive by, you'll see that I tilled the area in front of the house and planted flowers. I pruned all the vines that have grown in to small trees, and will till up the area behind the garage to plant a garden soon. I need to wash and stain the deck this weekend, too. Too much work, too little time. Hope everyone is well (with the exception of a few assorted douchebags). I guess the blog hasn't been as important to me as it has in the past. In the past, two years or better ago, there was a lot of confusion in my heart. I pretty much stepped back and took 2009 to think about life and where it was taking me - or, rather, where I was allowing it to take me. I didn't much like the avenue I was going down. The person I had become was not the person I wanted to be. I was letting people affect me who didn't deserve that right. There's an old saying: "no one can make you feel bad about yourself unless you let them." Well, I was letting them. Nine months ago now I said, "to hell with you, I'm not taking your crap any more." I walked away from some of the idiocy I had been dealing with for two years before. Idiocy that was compounded by the other forces. I pretty much told those forces what they could do with their crap, too.

The result?

Well, I guess, a happier me. I know that my decision nine months ago was the right one, even if it was a difficult one that should never have occurred. Sometimes, life throws you a curve ball. You can either swing or get cold-cocked by it. Sadly, I did the latter. I was reeling, dazed and confused for a while. But now, I think, I have recovered from the blow and come to my senses....and, YES, I do still have senses. Contrary to what those idiots think. To hell with them. Or, as the old saying goes: "Say what you want. Those who mind don't matter; those who matter don't mind."

Words of wisdom from someone who should have listened to them a loooonngg time ago.Rogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-53415865052901290382009-12-25T06:47:00.001-08:002009-12-25T06:49:02.977-08:00Christmas<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/SzTQmQ8NC4I/AAAAAAAAAQA/P8PH8CBa_MU/s320/-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419185607434636162" />

Merry Christmas everyone. It's hard sometimes to be thankful. It seems like over the past few years I've tolerated every idiot there is to tolerate on this planet. I've lost a lot; but I've gained a lot, too. I've had my heart ripped from my chest and spat upon; I've been harassed by what Harlan Ellison would call "arrogant stupidity"; I've been to the lowest spot I think I've ever been in my life, dear readers. But, even in the darkness, there were things to be thankful for. I've had great times with my children and friends; I've laid in the arms of a truly beautiful woman and felt a rare but, sadly, short-lived, moment of nirvana there; I've been more creative than probably any time in my life, and I have laughed. I filmed a low-budget movie - something I've ALWAYS wanted to do, and something I plan on doing again very, very soon. I've met and befriended some wonderfully eclectic peopled ("Better weird than plastic", I always say....and there are a lot of plastic people out there, my friends). So, I guess I'm just saying that I have much to be thankful for. I have my health (according to recent check-up) and I've fought some battles these past few years. I've won some; I've lost some. Some were ties, I think. I am thankful for all the people who have made my life a pleasure. Those who didn't....well, I'm not quite so thankful for them. But, I will not "go gently into that good night." I will rage, rage, against the dying of the light.

I hope everyone has a joyful holiday season.
RogerRogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-66751774038696527502009-11-07T18:37:00.001-08:002009-11-07T18:48:27.157-08:00Try to remember that kind of November<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 225px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/SvYvd7gKP3I/AAAAAAAAAPw/MnPKX1gN5h0/s320/l_823daff1448df9ae50eaa3d60d9cff18.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401556994312781682" />

Here we are a whole week into November. Less than eight weeks till Christmas. You wouldn't tell it from southern Illinois weather this weekend, though. It was in the 70's today and it's supposed to be warm tomorrow, too. I took the kids to the park. We filmed a little knight fight scene that turned ugly (sibling rivalry can be brutal!) so I took the plastic swords away from the kids and told them to go play. I sat there and watched and soaked up the sun. Not a bad way to spend your Saturday afternoon. I splurged on myself this week and bought a new book by one of my favorite authors, Harlan Ellison. This is a little omnibus volume with two books in it. I had one of the books already, so I bought it for the second book, "Harlan Ellison's Movie." What a weird movie script....it has a 70 ft tall Boll Weevil devouring a farmhouse! I shite you not! It'd be cool to see this film produced, although the language is dated as all get out (very hippies 60's kinda talk). Otherwise, it's Ellison's usual flair for outrageous fiction.

On my fiction side, I put together STRANGE SEX STORIES, a chapbook of 56 pages I plan on having out there for the public by the end of the year, alongside LIL' FELLERS, another short story collection. I've been working on UNDER THE BOARDWALK and I have the second chapter to SUCKERS, my online vampire novel, finished. And, to top it off, I've been working a bit on SAMURAI ROBOTS FROM HELL, the "no-budget" movie I shot in early October. Check out some rough clips over at www.myspace.com/rogerdaletrexler

More later, RogerRogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-68668229092261405822009-10-30T05:12:00.001-07:002009-10-30T05:20:54.099-07:00Halloween eve<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/SurZLM8HCiI/AAAAAAAAAPo/30IkDgGlvOs/s320/The_Scream2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398365889832094242" />

Well, tomorrow is Halloween. I have to agree with Stephanie that Halloween, and October in general, is a great time of year in southern Illinois. For the most part, the weather is mild during October, although we've had record amounts of rain (more rain, in fact, this October than any other October on record). Hopefully, it'll dry out well enough for me to attend Halloween parties in between editing SAMURAI ROBOTS FROM HELL this weekend. I'll also be appearing on WGGH radio Saturday around noon to discuss things I'm up to - books, comics, movies, etc... Tune in. I think it 1130 on your AM dial.

Until then, savor the waning days of October 2009, my friends.

RogerRogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-72795653032431835372009-10-25T05:57:00.001-07:002009-10-25T06:23:42.187-07:00Perspective and What You Don't Know Can Hurt Me<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/SuRL-Rzp1fI/AAAAAAAAAPg/1gR7nMqjdXw/s320/l_2f47e1ac30d9439ba53fee65d2bd2e37.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396521786800723442" />

I try to pride myself on being different. Unfortunately, sometimes people don't understand "different". They want the same old cookie cutter people who act like life has been zapped from them and they're ready for death. It drive me nuts to see people I went to high school telling me "All I do is work, come home, watch TV and go to bed." That's not living, my friends.....that's existing. I'm not saying that my life is all shits and giggles, but I'm at least creative and I try to act like a living creature and not a wage slave zombie.

Where did this come from? Well, last night I went to a party at the lovely Ms. Stephanie's house and we had a brief conversation about DEVLIN'S DESCENT, my online novel (you can read it free at www.annihilationpress.com). Anyway, after I came home I realized that I needed to explain a few of the reasons behind the book to her. The average person will receive no such explanation, but Stephanie, having dealt with me on a more personal level, deserved it. I hope I explained it well enough that she understands the reasoning behind the book better. I'm actually proud of DEVLIN'S DESCENT. Hell, I'm proud of just about EVERYTHING I've written over the course of the past three and a half years. And, on a different subject, 3 stories from HELL IN THE HEARTLAND, an anthology I co-edited with Martel Sardina back in 2007, received honorable mentions in Ellen Datlow's "The Year's Best Horror Stories." Pretty amazing, considering there are 15 stories in the book and the astronomical number of horror stories that are written on a yearly basis worldwide. I'm proud of that, too. Damn proud.

Anyway, I learned a long time ago that writing can be misconstrued and misinterpreted. DEVLIN'S DESCENT was very experimental for me. But, in the end, the book is about the triumph of the human spirit. Devlin descended into darkness: the darkness of the human soul...but, at least he acted like he was alive. He was hurting; but he was alive. Any character worth his or her salt that I write about will always act alive. You might not completely understand what I'm getting at with the story, but please try to take that away when you've read something I've written.

Thanks,
RogerRogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-74757732663667869042009-09-30T20:07:00.001-07:002009-09-30T20:30:28.317-07:00SAD IRON MEAT is coming soon<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/SsQd_fzPHeI/AAAAAAAAAPY/MUBIUDyF4ck/s320/STEVE+WOOLDRIDGE++(COVER+to+PRINT).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387464030947319266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/SsQd--g0TQI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/mQ9qiQHa-Og/s320/BRAD+MOORE%27S++(COVER+to+PRINT)+.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387464022011694338" />

It's a strange world, my friends. More on that in a moment.

I've been fairly productive this year, fiction-wise. I wrote an online novel, DEVLIN'S DESCENT (available for free online at www.annihilationpress.com ) that I'm fairly proud of. It was an experiment to see how far I could go with a few concepts. It also (I hope) helped finally purge my heart of a few things that have troubled me these past three years. Time will tell on that one. Anyway, DEVLIN'S DESCENT was finished back in late July, just short of my 48th birthday (yeah, I feel old). Anyway, after DEVLIN'S DESCENT, I sat around and pondered what I would do next. I've been toying around with the idea of doing a movie, but time and finances have been prohibitive. I still have the script to THE BIG MUDDY MONSTER, but put it on a back burner time finances aren't so tight and I can do it right. Yeah, I'm a poet. So, I decided I'd do a silly little movie called SAMURAI ROBOTS FROM HELL. We are scheduled to shoot the movie this weekend. It'll be a bunch of friends acting like idiots. It ought to be awesome fun. I'll post the trailer (which Brad Moore and I discussed last night) on here. You'll want to buy five copies for your mother, I'm sure.

I had so much fun and creative liberties with DEVLIN'S DESCENT that I thought I'd write another online novel. This one, SUCKERS, is a redneck vampire novel. It's a bit tongue-in-cheek; but, I think, you'll enjoy it. Chapter one is already posted over at www.annihilationpress.com and chapter two will follow as soon as I proofread it.

I also started work on the sort-of sequel to MURDER AT PK'S. UNDER THE BOARDWALK is set in Makanda, Illinois and starts out just after Woodstock during The Summer of Love. It's a grisly murder novel that, I think, will put MURDER AT PK'S to shame in the graphic murder department. I've written a couple thousand words on that so far.

Now, to the "it's a strange life" department. Love is a weird thing, my friends. I thought when I was young that, by the time I was the age I am now, I would understand things. Trust me, I don't. Shakespeare said it correctly when he wrote: "There are more things on Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophies." Well, I wholeheartedly agree. Hope springs eternal, my friends. If you care for someone, don't let them slip away.

As a final comment, the artwork gracing this post is for a comic book called SAD IRON MEAT. I worked on this comic with artist Brad Moore and Steve Woolridge (amongst others) and my story, "Sad Iron Meat", will be featured in issue #1. It will be available for sell at Vulturefest in Makanda On Oct. 17 (knocking on wood right now)

Hope everyone is well (with the exclusion of those who read my words with malice...buzz off, would ya?)

later,
RogerRogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3892409480029386924.post-34449433950074130272009-09-12T07:58:00.001-07:002009-09-12T08:10:28.912-07:00Saturday Afternoon Matinee and where does the time/money go?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3cTqDDV6W58/Squ3U5N4sVI/AAAAAAAAAPI/7wGnWOy8LPk/s320/7621_270500885222_584160222_8564007_7008063_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380595749408518482" />

Once again, it's been a while since I posted a blog. I've been trying to make by blog entries a bit more generic, considering the fact that there are some serious idiots reading my blog these days. If you don't like it here, move on, would ya? As the old saying goes: "Say what you want. Those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." So, idiots, you don't matter, okay? Yeah, up yours, too!

Anyway, I broke down and cleaned out my basement the other day. I've been seriously lax in that regard (I haven't cleaned down there in at least three years). Three trash cans full of dirt and trash so far (with at least another three in the near future). I uncovered the pool table and the kids have been playing pool. I moved the television over by the computer and it's actually a pretty cool rec room these days. I'm looking for a cheap (aka free) couch or futon to compliment the seating arrangements. After that, starting in October (or whenever the weather gets too cold outside), I plan on doing a Saturday afternoon double-feature in the basement. I've got a buttload of old sci-fi and horror movies that I can screen and, if I run out, my buddy Brad has a stash of his own. So, we'll enjoy the winter months in style. You folks that aren't idiots are more than cordially invited to come over and watch.

Hope everyone is well (except the idiots, of course). Take care, RogerRogerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18400284282012409589noreply@blogger.com0
